Aftershock Area Expansion and Mechanical Heterogeneity of Fault Zone within Subduction Zones

چکیده
We investigate global variations in the pattern of aftershock area expansion associated with large subduction zone earthquakes. The expansion of aftershock areas with time is relatively small in the subduction zones of Alaska, the Aleutians, Mexico, and parts of the Kuriles and South America. These subduction zones are interpreted to be characterized by moderate to strong interplate coupling. In contrast, the extent of aftershock expansion isgreater'for events within the subduction zones of northeast Japan and western and south Pacific where interplate coupling is inferred to be weak. These results are interpreted in terms of an asperity model where a fault zone is represented by a distribution of strong spots (asperities) and weaker zones. The immediate aftershock area is assumed to extend over an area occupied by asperities, and the subsequent expansion to occur into the surrounding weaker zones. If large asperities abut each other on a fault plane, interplate coupling is strong and little expansion of aftershock area occurs. Smaller and more sparsely distributed asperities cause weak interplate coupling and significant expansion of aftershock area. Small and densely distributed asperities result in moderate interplate coupling and little aftershock expansion.

Modelling of seismic waves in heterogeneous media using a wavelet-based method: application to fault and subduction zones
S U M M A R Y The wavelet approach to numerical simulation of elastic wave propagation is applied to models with localized heterogeneity, with significant contrasts with their surroundings. We consider zones with both lowered wave speed such as a fault gouge zone and elevated wave speeds such as in a subduction zone. In each of these situations the source lies within the heterogeneity. The repr...

متن کاملSegmentation of the Aleutian plate boundary derived from stress direction estimates based on fault plane solutions
We propose a new method to investigate stress homogeneity along plate boundaries based on the cumulative misfit of individual fault plane solutions, calculated using assumed stress tensors. Using this method, some segments of faults can be defined, without the time-consuming inversions for stress directions from earthquake fault plane solutions. We assume that the misfits are relatively constan...
متن کاملEarthquake faulting in subduction zones: insights from fault rocks in accretionary prisms
Subduction earthquakes on plate-boundary megathrusts accommodate most of the global seismic moment release, frequently resulting in devastating damage by ground shaking and tsunamis. As many earthquakes occur in deep-sea regions, the dynamics of earthquake faulting in subduction zones is poorly understood. However, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Expe...
متن کاملSystematic deficiency of aftershocks in areas of high coseismic slip for large subduction zone earthquakes
Fault slip during plate boundary earthquakes releases a portion of the shear stress accumulated due to frictional resistance to relative plate motions. Investigation of 101 large [moment magnitude (Mw) ≥ 7] subduction zone plate boundary mainshocks with consistently determined coseismic slip distributions establishes that 15 to 55% of all master event-relocated aftershocks with Mw ≥ 5.2 are loc...
